Explore the chemical and molecular interactions underlying the prevalent use of biomaterials in medical devices and biotechnology. Study biosensors in use and under development for measuring and tracking the complex biological components that provide a foundation of modern health care. Focus on the interaction between the analyte in its native environment, the biochemical systems employed to measure the analyte, and the physical transducers used to convert this information into electrical signals.
This certificate is part of a series of four medical engineering certificates, and can be taken individually or as a step toward earning the Master of Medical Engineering degree. Students interested in pursuing the master's degree should visit the Web site for program description and admissions requirements.
What the Program Covers
- Introduction to the human body's basic chemical and cellular systems
- Fundamental molecular processes that occur in living organisms, normally and when interacting with foreign materials
- Medical chemistry and chemical kinetics
- Overview of applications, biocompatibility, biomaterials types and properties
- Biomolecular materials, protein absorption, and cells on biomaterials
- Diagnostics, smart materials, drug release, and tissue engineering
- Biomechanics of medical devices, biocompatibility, and biosurfaces
Benefits
You will learn the biology and materials science basics necessary to leverage the use of materials in medicine and biology. Credits earned in this certificate can be applied to the Master of Medical Engineering degree if you have been accepted to the master's program.
Who Should Apply
Level: Some Experience
- Individuals who have an interest in the application of engineering to medicine or biotechnology
- Individuals already working in medicine, biotechnology or related fields who wish to expand their knowledge base
